Special Update – Lake Lure Reopening
Exciting news for Lake Lure guests: Lake Lure is officially open following Hurricane Helene, and normal lake use has resumed! Previous lakewide no-wake restrictions have been lifted, so guests can once again enjoy boating and time on the water while continuing to follow all posted no-wake zones, boating guidelines, and local lake rules.

Chimney Rock businesses are also open and ready to welcome visitors back. This is a wonderful time to return to the area, enjoy the lake, explore Chimney Rock, and support the local businesses and communities that make this region so special. Please note that public docks remain closed at this time. Guests who would like to get out on the water can rent boats through Yonder, with delivery available for lakefront homes or pickup available at the southernmost point of the lake.

Russell’s Fort at White Oak Point | Historic 1775 Fort on Lake Lure

Russell’s Fort is an authentic Revolutionary War-era fort built in 1775, featuring an original hand-hewn log structure that was disassembled and restored (as seen on Barnwood Builders) and reassembled on White Oak Point. Today, it blends North Carolina heritage with updated amenities, high-end finishes, and a front-row seat to lake and mountain views.

The Space
The heart of the home is designed for gathering—cathedral ceilings, a cozy living room with a fireplace and large-screen TV, and French doors that frame lake and mountain views. The kitchen is fully equipped with high-end stainless appliances and a custom breakfast table, and the main dining table seats up to 10. Step onto the deck for additional dining (seating for 8) and take in the scenery. A separate sitting room with reclining chairs is perfect for reading, relaxing, or simply soaking up the view.

A kayak and standup paddle boards are available for fun on the lake when conditions allow. A pontoon boat may also be available to rent for an additional fee (availability and lake status may affect access).

Need more room? The Cabin at White Oak Point—a 3BR/2BA home—is located right next door with easy access between both properties. You can reserve The Cabin separately, or book both homes together as “White Oak Point” for a larger group getaway.

Boat Rentals: You’re welcome to rent one of our five pontoon boats for a day—or for your entire stay. We’ll deliver the boat directly to you and pick it up when you’re done. Plus, you’re just around the corner from Lake Lure’s only marina - Lake Life Marina.

Lake Lure is scheduled for a drawdown from Jan 1–Mar 31, lowering approximately 1 ft/day to a total of 12 ft for maintenance, dredging, and dam work. Lake access and usage may be limited during this period. Water levels are expected to return to normal by mid-to-late April.

"We love Lake Lure and this house is great. Historical and unique, perfect for a family reunion. Tons of shared communal spaces (inside and out) and big enough that we aren't on top of each other. We made good use of the kayaks, paddleboards, and sauna. Owner is very responsive. Can't wait to come back next year!

"Our stay at Russel’s Fort was wonderful! The house is amazing, especially knowing the background story of the fort and the rebuild (watch the show on Barnwood Builders). We thoroughly enjoyed all the outdoor spaces with so many seating options and views of the lake. We also loved using the kayaks and paddle boards. Our family of 7 was very comfortable in the four bedrooms all with private bathrooms. There was plenty of room for us to gather together for meals or have privacy on the different porches. James was a great host with quick responses.

"We had a wonderful family reunion at Lake Lure and highly recommend this location. The owner was attentive and proactive in taking care of our needs. Loved spending so much time by and on the lake with activities for all -- swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and lakeside reading. House was delightful.

"Our stay at Russell's Fort on Lake Lure was an absolute dream! This beautiful historic cabin offered everything we could hope for and more. The charm and character of the cabin, combined with modern amenities, made for an unforgettable stay. The attention to detail throughout the cabin was truly impressive. The spacious kitchen and common rooms were perfect for hanging out and spending quality time together. We especially loved the large dining room table, which became the central gathering spot for big family meals with spectacular views, as well as the kitchen nook, which was a perfect spot for family games. The kitchen was clean, well-stocked, and made meal preparation a breeze. Having a grocery store right down the road was a huge plus. The cabin itself is cozy and welcoming, with spectacular views of the lake. The hot tub and fire pit provided the perfect settings for relaxation and fun family bonding over smores. We were delighted to find paddleboards, kayaks and even a floating dock available for our use, adding extra layers of fun to our days on the water. Having the option to rent and make use of a boat to explore the lake, the beach, lakefront restaurants and the surrounding areas was an incredible bonus and convenience. All of the bedrooms were beautiful, and the kids especially loved the great bunk beds downstairs. Every bedroom also had its own bathroom, which we greatly appreciated. The covered decks on every floor were great for relaxing, especially when the summer rain came through, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful scenery while staying dry. James was amazing, checking in with us often and always willing and able to help with anything we needed during our stay. He really helped to ensure our trip was comfortable and stress-free. Overall, Russell's Fort on Lake Lure exceeded our expectations in every way. It was the best family vacation we could have had, filled with wonderful memories that we will cherish forever. We highly recommend this gem to anyone looking for a perfect lake getaway.

"The house was beautiful and a great setting for a family get together. Lake Lure is a wonderful area and offers lots to do, and all generations of our family love visiting. You can tell that the host really performed a labor of love renovating/ converting the old fort into a home. The host, James, was very welcoming and responsive to any questions we had. James went out of his way to make sure the whole family was comfortable and having a great time. I would highly recommend going to Lake Lure and staying at the fort!! if you love old boats you can arrange for a guided tour on the lake in a beautifully restored classic wooden Chris Craft.

"Our family's stay at Yonder Vacation Rentals Russell's Fort exceeded all expectations! From the moment we arrived till our last day. I can’t imagine not coming back. The property itself was stunning. It was impeccably clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated with a perfect blend of modern amenities and cozy historic charm. As someone who appreciates early American history I marveled at the craftsmanship it would take to build such a structure during the late 1700’s. You can see ax marks detailed into the surrounding hand hewn logs. If those logs could talk, what stories would they tell? The views from the multi storied fort were breathtaking, overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Lure and surrounded by the greenery of the Rumbling Bald mountains. Every morning we ate breakfast on that balcony just to enjoy this most relaxing atmosphere. The location was ideal for both relaxation and adventure. We enjoyed lazy afternoons lounging lakeside playing with the supplied water toys. I became an expert paddle boarder. For those seeking adventure, there were plenty of nearby hiking trails in the Chimney Rock area and other water activities to explore such as tubing down the Broad river. You can even find two very well kept golf courses nearby. The proximity to downtown Lake Lure and its charming shops and restaurants was a major plus. However, we found that on most days, we never wanted to leave. Pro tip: You'll drive by the nearby supermarket to buy all groceries (and beverages) you need. The kitchen is well equipped! The Yonder vacation rental team provided an exceptional level of service. James is attentive to every detail. In today's world it's harder to find places where it’s easy to do business. You’ll find that here. Everything was easy and well communicated. Their commitment to ensuring our stay was perfect was evident in every interaction. In conclusion, Russell’s Fort is a gem of a destination for anyone looking to unwind. We cannot wait to return and create more unforgettable memories. Until next year!!! Highly recommended!
