Carrier Park is one of Asheville’s premier parks and very close to many of the Yonder Luxury Vacation Rentals! From 1960 until 1999, this site was home to a legendary track in the history of stock car racing. The 1/3 mile track was known originally as the New Asheville Speedway – but it’s nickname was “The River,” because of its close proximity to the French Broad River.
Today, the asphalt oval is now a velodrome for bicyclists, who pass the scuffs and dents on the outside wall left by gas powered racing machines.
The infield has volleyball courts, a giant playground, a roller-hockey rink and a basketball court. On the perimeter is a new lawn bowling court, and lots of surrounding trails, perfect for running or walking. The French Broad River Greenway, a 2.8-mile bicycle and pedestrian paved trail, connects Carrier Park to Hominy Creek Park and French Broad River Park as it winds along the river.
